Western celebrates the service of veterans in the United States armed forces

Western Michigan University has always been known as one of the top military friendly colleges in the U.S. Students and employees agree with that fact.

Veteran’s day is a federal holiday that recognizes those who have or are serving in the United States armed forces. WMU has a very large student body who are military veterans. Some businesses in the Kalamazoo community also provide free meals for veterans.

WMU’s Office of Military and Veterans Affairs helps ease the transition from military service to college student. Some are employees who have served in the military and can relate to incoming students such as assistant director Carl Lawrence, who is a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Events to celebrate veterans will been going on throughout the week. Today there was a blood drive aat the Army ROTC building along with a reading by WMU veterans at the Lee Honors college. On Thursday WMU’s Army ROTC program will be hosting a veteran’s dining in event in their building at 2 p.m. on east campus. Lastly there will be a veteran’s 5k run this Friday at Kanley track.
